National Afforestation and Eco-Development Board (NAEB) has initiated a scheme “Nagar Van Yojana” with a vision to increasing green cover and biodiversity in urban areas thereby providing a wholesome healthy and pollution free environment to city people.
It is a new concept of “urban forest” which might be a contradiction to a common thought that forest is a remote location which has a designated area and specific border or somewhere else far away. Now forest is being nurtured any suitable place especially in urban areas to balance natural environment. Trees and other plant filter the air and produce oxygen to the environment. Urban forest helps to capture, hold and filter water to clean it and buffer communities from flooding. It provides cool atmosphere to counter global warming and stop erosion and absorb runoff.
The Nagar Van Yojana are developed in the vicinity of cities and muncipal corporations and degraded forest areas, facing threat due to destruction and encroachment. Primary objective is to protect the forest lands and create forested land in the city or near it. Initially Government is developing 400 Nagar Vans and 200 Nagar Vatikas in the country during the period of 2020-2021 to 2024-2025. The total estimated cost is Rs 895 crores for the period of 2020-2021 to 2024-2025 for implementation from National Funds under Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).
