Mukkam

Mukkam, located in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, is a vibrant town situated 27 km from Kozhikode. It serves as the commercial and business hub for eastern Kozhikode. The town is well-connected by State Highway 34, which runs from Koyilandi to Edavanna.

Recently upgraded from a grama panchayath to municipality status, Mukkam is experiencing rapid growth and development. Its economy is predominantly agricultural, with a strong focus on trading rubber, coconut, arecanut, banana, and other local produce. The skilled farmers in the region play a crucial role in sustaining and advancing the local economy.

Mukkam has blossomed into a regional shopping epicenter, drawing customers from neighboring areas like Omassery, Karassery, Kodiyathoor, Koodaranji, Chathamangalam and Thiruvambady panchayaths. Its retail landscape has evolved with the establishment of hypermarkets and supermarkets, complemented by convenient home delivery services. Beyond retail, Mukkam thrives as a wholesale market, supplying retailers with a variety of goods. This dynamic blend of traditional commerce and modern conveniences has strengthened Mukkam’s position as a thriving commercial hub.

Iruvanjipuzha, a significant tributary of the Chaliyar River, gracefully meanders through the town of Mukkam. Originating from the heights of Vellarimala in the Wayanad-Kozhikode border region of the Western Ghats, the river bestows life upon the surrounding landscape. Its fertile banks sustain agriculture, providing sustenance to the local populace. However, the river’s benevolent nature is tempered by the ferocity of the monsoon season. Landslides in the Western Ghats often wreak havoc on the river’s course, causing erosion and posing a threat to nearby residential areas. The rising water levels during these torrential rains necessitate constant vigilance and preparedness from the community. Despite these challenges, Iruvanjipuzha remains an integral part of the region’s ecosystem, supporting both human life and biodiversity.
