Assam Joha rice

Assam Joha rice is an aromatic winter rice (sali rice) which is cultivated in North eastern part of India for centuries. It is short in grain size and has a low yield of less than one tonne per hectare. Joha rice is most appropriate for preparing scented Pulao, gheer and rice pudding. Joha’s fine grain characteristic bring premium prices for the rice among other varieties of rice in India and outside.

High demand but low production

Eventhogh Joha rice fetches premium prices in national and international markets like Europe, farmers abstain from growing this aromatic variety due to lower yield per hectare. In total sali rice cultivation, only 5% of total are is used for Joha rice cultivation.
