Puthalam, Areekode

Puthalam is a small outskirt of Areekode town in Areekode grama panchayath of Malappuram district. Puthalam and South Puthalam which are situated on the southern coast of Chaliyar river in Areekode town. Kerala State Highway 34 which connects Koyilandy and Edavanna, is passing through Puthalam. Maithra Kadavu bridge across the Chaliyar river in Puthalam connects Areekode – Othayi road . 44 kilometers long Parappanangadi – Kondotty – Areekode  state highway 65 begins from Puthalam.

South Puthalam

South Puthalam is a major junction in Areekode town where Areekode – Manjeri road merges with Koyilandy – Edavanna state highway. West flowing Chaliyar river turns into northward direction from Soth Puthalam.

Food city

Almost all fast food restaurants are centred around Puthalam. Indian, Arabic, North Indian food stalls offer high quantity foods at affordable prices. Many fast food lovers rush to Areekode Puthalam in the evening.

Saligramam

Puthalam Saligramam temple on the west shore of Chaliyar river is a holy place and temple of “Balitharpan” or religious rituals for ancestors. It is a Narasimha temple where seated calmly. This  eastward darshan temple is  hundreds of  years old and Balitharpan is held everyday. On Karkidaka Vavu day, hundreds of believers reach in Saligramam temple for Balitharpan offering. Even the name  Puthalam itself was derived from temple which belonged to the temple of ten illams in the area. The area was known as “Pathillam” which means ten illam and later became Puthalam.
