Chekannur

Chekannur is a small town in Vattamkulam panchayath of Malappuram district, Kerala. It lies on Malappuram – Palakkad border. Kandanakam – Anakkara road is passing through Chekannur town. Edappal is the nearest major town. Anakkara, Kumbidi, Vattamkulam are neighboring towns.

Kerala state highway 69 (Thrissur to Kuttipuram) passes through Kandanakam, a neighborhood of Chekannur.

Chekannur is an agrarian village. Coconut, arecanut, banana and tapioca are the major crops.

Chekannur Moulavi

Abdul Hasan Moilavi alias Chekannur Moulavi was a Muslim religious scholar who graduated from Baqiayat Salihat Arabic College Vellore, Tamilnadu. He was a secular leaned person and tried to reform and modernize Islam. He established Quran Sunnath Society which subjected heavy criticism from ultra orthodox muslims in Kerala.

On the night of 29 July 1993, he was taken out of his house in a vehicle that did not have a number plate by two unidentified persons purportedly for Islamic classes. It is widely believed that he was murdered by ultra orthodox groups, but prosecution failed to prove that he was murdered. Initially Kerala police and Crime branch investigated the case but failed to prove murder due to lack of enough evidence to put up the court. Different religious groups and political parties started statewide agitations and hunger strike for a CBI enquiry. In 1996 Highcourt of Kerala handed over the Chekannur Moulavi disappearing case to CBI. But even CBI failed to prove any evidences that he was murdered. Even the efficiency of CBI was questioned in the court.

Edappal Beverage Outlet

Kerala state beverage outlet is situated at Kandanakam, three kilometers away from Chekannur. It is one of the busiest outlet in this area due to lack of enough beverage outlet nearby.
