On the night of 29 July 1993, he was taken out of his house in a vehicle that did not have a number plate by two unidentified persons purportedly for Islamic classes. It is widely believed that he was murdered by ultra orthodox groups, but prosecution failed to prove that he was murdered. Initially Kerala police and Crime branch investigated the case but failed to prove murder due to lack of enough evidence to put up the court. Different religious groups and political parties started statewide agitations and hunger strike for a CBI enquiry.
