Malpe beach in Udupi district of Karnataka is one of the best virgin beaches of India. It is a relaxing beach with pristine white sand on the Arabian sea coast of India. Malpe beach is situated 6 kilometers from Udupi and 65 kilometers from Mangalore city. It is a perfect holiday beach in southern Karnataka. Usually more than 3000 people visit the beach and on weekends it is very crowded. The long stretch of golden sand, oscillating palm trees on the beach and picturesque view of St.Mary’s Island make this beach popular and attractive. Karnataka’s first floating bridge is situated in Malpe which provide wonderful water sports activities for the tourists. This floating bridge was inaugurated on May 6, 2022. This floating bridge is 100 meter long and 3.5 meter wide is being operated by local entrepreneurs. At a time 100 visitors are allowed on the bridge. On May 8, 2022, a cyclone damaged the bridge and pantoon blocks have come off .
St.Mary’s island is 20 minutes away from the coast and boat service is available. St.Mary’s island is famous for its stunning natural beauty and its unique geographical features. St.Mary’s island is consisted of four small islands. The presence of columnar basalt is unique to this island. It is estimated that these were formed million years ago. Madagascar and St.Mary’s island have some geographical similarities because Madagascar was broken away from India subcontinent. The islands were formed due to volcanic activity and one of the islands has unique hexagonal columns which is rare in India.
Safe beach
Leaseholders of Malpe Beach Tourism in Udupi district got safety nets and red flags on August 3, 2021along the beach. Administration has also issued warning to tourists for not venturing into the Sea. These safety measures were taken after the repeated drowning incidents involving tourists.
