Operation Indravati

Operation Indravati is a plan to evacuate stranded Indians in violence-hit Haiti. The operation was launched by External Affairs Minister S.Jaishankar on 21 March 2024. India always possesses robust contigency plans to evacuate its citizens from crisis zones.

Haiti has been in crisis since 2018, after a protest of opposition party against hikes in oil prices. It turned to assassination of President Jovenel Moise on 7 July 2021 by a group of armed men. Dominican Republic became a rescue base for coordinating rescue operation. According to MEA, 75 to 90 Indians have stranded in the country during the operation.

Situation got worsened after the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry on March 12 and armed gangs took over the majority of the capital city.

As part of operation, 12 nationals were evacuated to Dominican Republic.
