Magalir Urimai Thogai

Magalir Urimai Thogai or Women’s Right to Assistance is a universal basic income scheme of Tamilnadu Government to provide Rs.1000 to eligible woman head of the family. It is the largest direct cash transfer programme implemented by an Indian state. West Bengal Government’s similar scheme of Lakshmir Bhandar distributes Rs.500 to all woman head of the family monthly.

Magalir Urimai Thogai was a major poll-time promise of DMK and  MK Stalin in 2021 assembly election. This promise granted DMK a massive victory in the state to end ten years of opposition and MK Stalin, son of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, became Chief Minister of Tamilnadu for the first time.

Tamilnadu Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan announced implementation of the scheme in his 2023-2024 state budget speech. Minister has set the launching date of flagship programme of Stalin Government on 15 September 2023, birth anniversary of first DMK chief minister CN Annadurai. Rs.7000 crore has been kept apart for Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme. Minister said that Magalir Urimai Thogai will be a game changer in the socio-economic life of women in Tamilnadu which constitutes fifty percent of the state population.
