Pambanar

Pambanar is a plantation town in Peerumedu taluk, Idukki district in Kerala. It is known for its picturesque landscapes, tea and spice plantations, and pleasant climate. The town, like many in the Idukki district, is nestled within the Western Ghats, providing a lush and scenic environment. Its economy primarily revolves around agriculture, with plantations of tea, coffee, and various spices being significant contributors. The region’s natural beauty and cooler climate also make it a potential spot for tourism. Pambanar is located on the Kottayam-Kumily road. The town is situated eighty kilometers away from Kottayam town and twenty-seven kilometers away from Kumily town. Pambanar is a beautiful location surrounded by tea, coffee, and cardamom plantations.

Parunthumpara, a scenic location in Pambanar, derives its name from the Malayalam word meaning “Eagle Rock.” The area is named Parunthumpara because its vast, expansive landscape resembles the wings of an eagle. One of the notable attractions of Parunthumpara is the visibility of the famous Makarajyothi light. This light appears on the Ponnambalamedu hill in Sabarimala and is a significant event for Sabarimala pilgrims. Many pilgrims visit Parunthumpara to witness the Makarajyothi, making it a popular and often crowded destination during the pilgrimage season.

Pattumala Matha Pilgrim Shrine, also known as Kochu Velankanni, is located in Pambanar. This shrine is notable for having the largest church dome in India. As a major pilgrimage center, it stands out for its impressive construction, being made entirely of granite.

Pambanar is well connected by road and is conveniently located just 24 kilometers from Thekkady, a renowned tourist destination in Kerala. Additionally, it is only 25 kilometers from the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, making it easily accessible for travelers.

Pambanar has a significant Tamil community, and people here speak both Malayalam and Tamil fluently.
