Pampupara is a cardomom plantation village in Idukki district of Kerala. This small village is situated on the Munnar – Kumily state highway ( SH 19 ).

Major Facts

1. Pampupara is a border village between Chakkupallam panchayath and Vandenmedu panchayath. This small village is shared by both panchayaths.

2. Pampupara is 12 kilometers away from Kumily town and 20 kilometers away from Kattappana town. This is also a border town between Kerala and Tamilnadu. This small village is situated just 3 kilometers away from Tamilnadu border.

3. Pampupara is mainly a cardomom plantation town. Cardomom is the backbone of the economy. This is part of Cardomom hills of Western ghat mountain system. The village has an undulating terrains with valleys. One of the largest cardomom auction centers of the world is located in Puttady, close to Pampupara.

4. Pampupara is on one of the busiest highways of Idukki district (Munnar – Kumily ). Tourists from Munnar to Thekkady and vice versa usually use this road and passes through Pampupara.

5. Anakkara is the closest town and people depend on Anakkara for the commercial activities. There are many spice trading and collection centers in Anakkara.

7. Eventhough this is a major cardomom growing region, black pepper, ginger, coffee, tapioca and banana are also cultivated.

8. Pampupara has vast paddy fields and this is one of the rarest regions where both cardomom and rice are grown. They have their own indigenous variety of rice seed called “Palthoni” which is highly resistant against heavy rains or other climatic conditions and pest attack compared to other high yield varieties of rice.

9. Pampupara and adjacent locations including Anakkara and Sulthankada was the proposed site for Idukki airport which was turned down by Government due to heavy protest by local people. They feared that airport will destroy highly vulnerable paddy fields which is rarely found in Idukki district.

10. Pampupara is a major village in the point of tourism. Thekkady, one of the major tourist destinations of Kerala is located just 15 away. Other famous tourist attractions like Chellarkovil viewpoint and waterfalls, Pandikuzhi viewpoint are within 10 kilometers radius of Pampupara.
