Sulthankada is a small village in Chakkupallam panchayath near Anakkara town in Idukki district, Kerala. It is a western extension of Anakkara town.

Major Facts

1. Sulthankada is situated on the famous Kumily – Munnar state highway ( SH 19 ). Located just 10 kilometers away from Kumily town and 20 kilometers from Kattappana town.

2. This small village is a main cardomom producing area and part of Cardomom hills of Western ghat mountain system at an altitude of 900 meters from the sea level. Cardomom is widely cultivated.

3. Sulthankada has an undulating terrain with highlands and valleys. Along with cardomom, black pepper, coffee, ginger, tapioca and banana are also widely cultivated.

4. Eventhough Sulthankada has couple of small retail shops, majority of people depend on Anakkara for their needs due to proximity to the town. Panchayath headquarters are situated in Anakkara.

5. Sulthankada is one of the rarest regions in the world where cardomom and paddy grow together. This small village has vast paddy fields. A native rice seed “Palthoni ” is cultivated here in the paddy fields along with other high yield varieties of rice.

6. Sulthankada and adjacent areas were proposed site for Idukki airport which was later turned down by Government due to heavy protest to conserve paddy fields.

7. Sulthankada and adjacent areas has a vast history dating back to Neolithic era. There are many Nannangadis ( a burial monument buried in a big urn ) have been found in that area.

8. Sulthankada is very close to Thekkady, one of the major tourist destinations in Kerala. Periyar tiger reserve in Thekkady is just 12 kilometers away from Sulthankada. Chellarkovil viewpoint and waterfalls, Pandikuzhi viewpoint, another main attractions in the area, located just 3 kilometers away.

9. Sulthankada is a border village between Kerala and Tamilnadu.
