The Great Banyan Tree located in Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanical Garden in Shibpur, Howra, Kolkata is the biggest and widest banyan tree in the world. Banyan tree is the national tree of India which is the most revered in Indian culture and Hinduism. Banyan tree holds an important position in Indian culture and religion. Banyan tree has been a subject for stories and myths in Indian culture. The leaf of banyan tree is believed to be the resting for the Lord Krishna. Banyan tree has also been mentioned in different Buddhist texts.

Great Banyan Tree in Kolkata is estimated to be more than 250 years old. It covers about an area of 3.5 acres in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden. This wonderful tree has an appearance of a small forest, but it appears to be separate individual tree due to its aerial roots. The tree now lives without its main trunk. The canopy of this banyan tree constantly widens over the years and it has been a witness to the modern history of India. This Great Banyan tree has witnessed British India and Indian national movement.
