Jatayu Para which is locally known, is the world largest bird sculpture. Jatayu is a significant and heroic figure in the epic of Ramayana. As an eagle, Jatayu displayed immense bravery when he attempted to rescue Sita Devi from the clutches of Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. In a fierce battle to protect Sita, Jatayu fought valiantly but was overpowered by Ravana, who severed one of his wings. The wounded Jatayu fell to the earth, and it is believed that he landed on the rocks of Chadayamangalam in Kollam district, Kerala. Jatayu Para, or Jatayu Earth’s Center, has been created as a tribute to this legendary bird’s courage and sacrifice.
After Jatayu’s fall, Sreerama and Lakshmana found him still alive at the site. With his last breaths, Jatayu informed Rama that Sita had been taken southward by Ravana, heading towards Sri Lanka. After delivering this crucial information, Jatayu passed away. To honor the brave bird’s sacrifice, Rama performed the final rituals for Jatayu, giving him a dignified farewell.
