Vellaramkunnu is a small picturesque plantation town in Kumily panchayath of Idukki district, Kerala. Situated 9 kilometer west of Kumily and Thekkady.

Vellaramkunnu is a cardomom plantation town. Cardomom related activities are the backbone of Vellaramkunnu economy. There are many cardomom plantations in and around the town. Black pepper is also grown here along with cardomom. There are many spice collection shops here where farmers are able to sell their spices products.

Vellaramkunnu has an altitude of one thousand and above from sea level which is ideal for cardomom growing. This small town receives heavy rainfall from south west monsoon ( Kalavarsham) and from north east monsoon ( Thulavarsham ). Plantations here get enough manpower from neighboring Tamilnadu, as cardomom cultivation is a labour intensive process.

Kumily – Anavilasam – Kattappana road passes through Vellaramkunnu. The town is well connected by roads. This town has road connectivity to the neighboring Kumily, Thekkady, Kattappana, Vandiperiyar and Chenkara.

Vellaramkunnu is a premier education hub of Kumily panchayath due to presence of St.Mary’s Higher Secondary School. The school was established in 1960 in three acres of land donated by Ramar and Dinakumar from Tamilnadu. Hundreds of students are enrolled here every year. This school is popular for its quality education and English language learning.

Vellaramkunnu is situated in the middle of one of the major tourism destinations of Kerala. Famous tourist destination Thekkady and Periyar tiger reserve is just twelve kilometers away. Kollam – Dindigul National highway 183 passes through Chelimada, a neighboring town of Vellaramkunnu.
