Tavanur central prison and correction centre is the fourth centre jail in Kerala and the first centre jail built by Kerala Government. Poojappura jail in Thiruvananthapuram, Viyyur jail in Thrissur and Pallikkunnu jail in Kannur were built before the formation of Kerala.
Tavanur central prison is situated in Thrikkanapuram of Tavanur panchayath, Malappuram district on the southern bank of Bharathappuzha (Nila river).
Tavanur central prison has an authorized capacity which can accommodate 706 inmates. The prison is well connected by road network. National Highway 66 which connects Panvel in Mumbai and Kanyakumari in Tamilnadu passes through here. State highway 69 (Thrissur to Thrikkanapuram) starts from here. The jail is in a confluence of three districts, Malappuram, Palakkad and Thrissur. The prison is easily accessible from all these three districts.
The three story jail with an area of 8 acre constructed with a cost of 34 crore rupees, inaugurated by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
