North east Indian state of Manipur has witnessed an historical event on 27 January, 2022, after 75 years of India’s independence, first goods train reached at Rani Gaidinliu railway station in the picturesque village of Oinamlong, Tamenglong district.
Manipur has been disconnected with mainland India for a long time. The new railway connectivity will enhance economy of Manipur and social condition of people.
Rani Gaidinliu railway station is part of 14000 crore rupees worth 111 km long Jiribam – Imphal line which will be extended to Moreh, India – Myanmar border town. Rani Gaidinliu railway station earlier was known as Kaimai railway station and renamed after famous freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu. Gaidinliu Pamei was a Naga freedom fighter who revolted against British and was sentenced to imprisonment. First Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru called her “Rani” and later known as Rani Gaidinliu.
Look East Policy of India
Rani Gaidinliu railway station and Jiribam – Imphal – Moreh line will enhance India’s ambitious Look East Policy to strengthen relationship between India and ASEAN countries. India believes this line will be able to connect existing lines in Myanmar’s Kalay railway. Railway line through Manipur into Myanmar will also be part of Trans-Asian railway network which connects Singapore and Istanbul in Turkey. United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) is planning the Tran-Asian railway to enhance transportation of good from Europe to Asia and vise versa. It will reduce shipping time and cost between Europe and Asia.
