Nedumkandam

Nedumkandam is a fast growing commercial and business centre in Idukki district of Kerala. This town is located at an altitude of 900 meters above the sea level.

Nedumkandam is the third largest town in Idukki district after Thodupuzha and Kattappana and the second largest town in Idukki highrange area.

Nedumkandam is the headquarters of Udumbanchola taluk. This town is located almost to Kerala Tamilnadu border. The town is well connected by roads. Three state highways pass through in and around Nedumkandam. State highway 19 ( Kumily to Munnar) passes through the heart of the town. Majority of the town has been concentrated both sides of State highway 19. Both state highway 40 ( Alappuzha to Cumbummettu ) and state highway 42 ( Kumarakom to Cumbummettu ) also pass through Nedumkandam.

This town is strategically located between two major tourist destinations of Kerala, Munnar and Thekady. There is approximately 50 kilometers to Thekkady and Munnar. Tourists from Munnar to Thekkady and vice versa use state highway 19 for the journey. Ramakkalmedu, a major tourist destination in Idukki is just 12 kilometers away from Nedumkandam.

Nedumkandam has a pleasant climate throughout the year due to high altitude and rainfall.

Cardomom and pepper are the major crops cultivated in Nedumkandam. This is part of Cardomom hills of Western ghat mountain. There are many cardomom plantations in and around the town. This place is ideal for coffee cultivation.

Nedumkandam is major centre of commerce and business. People from neighboring panchayaths frequently travels to here for the shopping and other purposes. There are many supermarket and shopping centers in the town.

Munnar, Kattappana, Erattayar, Thookkupalam and Puliyanmala are major neighboring towns.

All important Government offices and hospitals are concentrated in the north eastern part of the town. Taluk hospital, mini civil station, police station, sub treasury, coperative banks and some other offices can be found here.

Nedumkandam has significant amount of Hindu, Muslim and Christian community.

Tourism Destination

Nedumkandam and neighboring areas are major tourists centres in Idukki district. Hills and mountains towering to the sky offer mesmerizing panoramic view of Idukki highrange and Tamilnadu fertile lowland.

Nedumkandam and its surrounding areas are the windiest regions in Asian continent and are home to many wind farms including Ramakkalmedu.

Kailasappara viewpoint, Chathurangapara and Ramakkalmedu are the major tourist attractions near Nedumkandam.

Kailasappara

Kailasappara is a 2000 metre high hillock covered with lush green meadows and breathtaking viewpoints overlooking huge distant  towering hills of Western Ghat mountains. Kailasappara showcases a mesmerizing visual treat for tourists and get a feel to touch floating clouds. Monsoon season adds more greenery along with foggy surfaces.

Kailasappara is situated two kilometres away from Nedumkandam town of Udumbanchola taluk in Idukki district, Kerala. Nedumkandam is easily accessible from Kattappana town, largest town in highrange of Idukki. Munnar – Thekkady highway is passing through Nedumkandam town. Two state highways, SH 19 (Munnar to Kumily) and SH 40 ( Alappuzha to Cumbummettu) intersect at Nedumkandam town.

Kailasappara is blessed with stunning view of pretty Ramakkalmedu windmill which is spanned over windy mountains of Kerala – Tamilnadu borders. The area is part of the windiest place in India and also one of the windiest places in Asian continent. Constant wind speed of 35 km/hr which is ideal for electricity generation. There is a Mahadeva temple atop of of Kailasappara which is 5000 years old. Evergreen Chembakam trees along with a perennial well are seen around temple.

The journey to atop is little difficult and hard. Jeeps, motorcycles and other offroad vehicles are ideal to reach from Nedumkandam. It is highly recommended to carry a stick to prevent slippery and falls  during walking through a windy landscape.
